Why Would I Ever Not Own My Website?
Unfortunately some companies only “lease” you the website. They own the design, the files, and sometimes even the domain name too! If you ever decide to move on to greener pastures, sorry bud, you’re out every dime you spent. So be sure to read their contract before you sign it!
From an Intellectual Property perspective, the person/company that designed and built your website created it, so they might feel that it should belong to them. On the other hand, if you’re a small business owner you understandably might think “Hey, I paid you for this, so it’s mine!” Ultimately it’s going to come down to what your contract with the provider states, or what your attorney or the courts decide. Regardless of the outcome, who wants to do business that way?!
